22 Ammo Discussions/Testing

I’m interested to hear your theories about velocities regarding .22lr match ammunition.

We use RWS r-50 or Eley Match all at 1080fps or below. I have never realized any benefit from faster .22 ammo for anything but hunting at 50 yards or less.

I don’t normally shoot the high velocity ammo, but found the high velocity to be a little better insurance policy on those stubborn rams at Raton. Day three found us with stiff wind in our face which helped blow the targets back up, and you really did need that extra energy to get them to go over.

I tried SK high velocity match. It shot ok at chickens and pigs but fell apart at turkeys and rams. Groups at rams were, hope it hit it size! I'll stay with the standard velocity.

It would seem accuracy theories are a closely held secret.

I have accuracy tested three Stevens 44s with different barrels (Original, Green Mountain & Shilen Rachet). One with a "sporting" chamber & two with tight match chambers. I've accuracy tested the rifles with SK Long Range, RWS R50, RWS R100, Ekey Match, Eley 10X, Lapua Center-X amoung others with velocities ranging from 1070 to 1144fps. All three rifles prefer velocities around 1100fps or more for acceptable accuracy on the turkeys & rams. I don't have a theory other than to say that different rifles prefer different ammo which requires trying several brands of high-quality ammo over a range of velocities to find the velocity sweet spot.
